Issue 4 Could 'Dis Be Cane Shum A Different View Of Keynsham January 2004
A SMALL COD PIECE AND CHIPS

Trawlers not pictured Cod almighty - where are the fish?
Local anglers face financial ruin this week, following new E.U. proposals aimed at saving diminishing fish populations in and around U.K. waters, prompting localised outrage in the town.

Last months talks within the European Commission Fisheries Council struck a huge blow to regional fisherman. Scientists say Cod stocks are at a historic low and want a ban on all Cod fishing in the North Sea, Irish Sea, off the Scottish west coast and the River Chew at Keynsham. If the move is successful, Keynsham's anglers could soon find themselves facing hefty fines and confiscated tackle if caught illegally poaching the species.

Could ‘Dis Be Cane Shum contacted local fisherman Eric Codlingfoot for his views on this controversial ruling. Eric told us: "Well it ain't much of a problem for me. I've not landed a cod out the Chew since 1968 when that huge flood chucked a few up this way. I found 'em on the path when the tide went out. Me missus filleted 'em up and fried 'em in batter. Cracking bit of fish it were. Since then though, it's mainly shopping trolleys and ducks down there."

However, not everyone is in agreement with the E.U's actions. One un-named fisherman informed us: "They Spanish lot 'ave been poaching our fish since forever and a day. Do we go to Benidorm and catch all their Cod? No. It's a bleedin' joke. And not even a funny one. Balls to buying a rod licence this year. I'm gonna boycott Spain and take my 'olidays in Mine'ead."

Scientists at Keynsham University have dismissed claims that the local Cod population is on the wane. Professor Ivan Hughes told us: "Cod stocks in the Chew have remained very stable for the last 25 years. As far as our research is concerned, there is no need for this Eurocratic action." So it remains to be seen whether this ruling will have any effect on our local cod fishing industry. Chip shop prices are likely to remain stable throughout 2004, barring another potato famine.
